“Water Only To Drink”

Stop. Before you begin sending angry emails to the author, please recognize that yours truly is probably suffering more than you. Today’s Lenten Challenge, to consume water only as our beverage, will be the author’s most difficult challenge of the year, guaranteed.

Any food consumption today is okay for folks in this Challenge. Why is this difficult for the author? A food fast is a breeze for me, but 24 hours without Coca-Cola, Mountain Dew, or Simply Lemonade? That’s a whole other level of pain for me. Ask those that know me well and they will tell you: avoid contact with me today if you can. I’m gonna’ be cranky – or, at least, more cranky than normal.

I normally hydrate with manufactured beverages. Given that 55-60% of the adult human body is comprised of water, it makes perfect sense that my body would crave water. God even provided me with tools in my body to convert stuff into the water I need. So why make my body work so hard? I should give myself a break and drink more water.

Today’s Challenge is made for someone just like me: I know I need to consume more water. I’ll have to leave my favorite beverages in the frig for at least 24 hours. However, I’ve already got a head start since I didn’t have anything other than water since dinner last night. I’ve only got about 12 hours to go…If I can make it that long without food, surely, I can make it that long by drinking water as my only beverage today.

Drink water for 24 hours! We will want something else, but we may find God has already created all that we need.

“Let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who wants it take the water of life free of charge.” (Revelation 22:17b)
