“Plant Something Today”

Have you planted a seed, flower, or plant lately? Most of us probably haven’t, so today’s Lenten Challenge – “Plant Something Today” – might sound rather ridiculous. But for those of us who have already planted a few things this year, we will welcome this Challenge because we’re always looking for an excuse to grow something.

One doesn’t have to be a Master Gardener to successfully grow something, though it is obvious that those with green thumbs seem to be more successful than those without. But whether we are successful or not doesn’t really matter. The Challenge is not to successfully grow something until it blossoms and matures. Rather, this Challenge is just to try it.

So, if you consider yourself a plant killer and not so much a plant grower, try this. Get a handful of dirt, drop it into a jar, and drop in a seed. Then add a few drops of water and half a handful of dirt on top of that. Put the jar somewhere that it can get some sun and just keep the soil moist with water (check it every day or two). It’s that simple.

Where do we get a seed? We probably have some at home. It can be a citrus seed from a lemon, lime, or orange. It can be a sunflower seed, pear or apple seed, or the top of an onion. If you’re blessed to have a yard or a lawn, you can plant just about anything. Dig a hole, drop in a seed, bulb, or plant, and cover it up.

Even if it’s still winter, you can start growing something indoors in a jar, then move it outside after the cold weather passes.

Planting something is easy. The purpose of today’s Challenge is to make us aware of something other than our normal complaints, aches, and irritations. Life can blossom anywhere if we give it a chance.

Plant Something Today! Inside or outside counts!

“God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.’” (Genesis 1:29, NRSV)
