“Wear Pink Today!”

Yeah, you guessed it! It’s National Barbie Day! Across the world, people will be celebrating Barbie with a new fanaticism that can only be compared to Beatlemania in the 1960s. Granted, when the Beetles appeared on Ed Sullivan, Barbie had already been wildly popular for five years.

I don’t know who is more well-known or beloved, but life without Barbie would surely have been different. Oh, I didn’t have Barbie Dolls, but as a big brother who had a Barbie-beloving little sister, I sure did test my new firecrackers with a little help from Barbie. She spared many a green army man, which I was unwilling to sacrifice. Now that I’m much older, I’ve learned the error of my ways. No longer would I be willing to test Barbie’s resiliency against a Black Cat, especially after purchasing a number of Barbies for my own daughters. Barbie is much too valuable in our modern world to simply dismiss, overlook, or sacrifice on the 4th of July.

Today, Barbie receives her own National Day. Barbie became a symbol for generations of young girls that any future they might dream of is possible. Is it any wonder that Barbie Day is the first day after International Women’s Day? Since her introduction 65 years ago, Barbie has provided little girls with images of motherhood, career, adventure, and more. Today, Barbie still continues to give young girls a platform from which to launch their dreams and imagination.

Yeah, Barbie is a big deal. Wearing pink today won’t immediately identify us with this cultural icon, but at least it’ll make people think we’re fashionable. And maybe, like Barbie, we will dream a little, too.

Give thanks to God for the many women around us fulfilling God’s purposes for their lives. Wear Pink Today!

“Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” (Luke 1:45, NIV)
