“Go To Sleep An Hour Earlier”

One week ago, Daylight Savings rudely interrupted our schedules. Some of us have experienced no trouble at all, while others of us are still running an hour late for our appointments. My guess is that all of us could use some extra sleep.

Daylight Savings really messed things up, not because I lost an hour of sleep, but because it’s now daylight for so long that my body doesn’t want to shut down at its’ normal time. Every night, I’m awake at least one hour later! I didn’t just lose one hour of sleep last Saturday night. Instead, daylight Savings cost me one hour of sleep every day last week. I’m now seven hours behind on the week. I didn’t really understand this until a couple of days ago when I finally hit the wall.

Thank the LORD for today’s Lenten Challenge, one that I scheduled eight weeks ago. (It’s funny how God works, huh?). Going to bed an hour earlier will be bothersome and inconvenient, but it will help me more than anything else I can do. I’ll feel so much better the next day. It’s a bit like charging one of our electronic devices. When we plug it in without using it, our device charges faster and more completely than otherwise possible.

Our bodies are similar to electronic devices. When we are asleep, our body is recharging. The more rest time we can create, without interference or distraction, the more complete our body will charge.

No, I’m not a scientist, I’m just assuming that everyone reading this is behind in their sleep. There. I said it.

You know I’m right. Go to bed an hour earlier tonight. It’ll do your body good, too.

“At day’s end I’m ready for sound sleep, for you, God, have put my life back together.” (Psalm 4:8, The Message)
