“Deliver Some Love!”

This past Friday evening, my awesome postal carrier brought a letter to my door at 6:30 pm. Usually, I see her making the rounds about noon, but on this day, she was still hard at work well into the evening.

After that, I paid attention. On Saturday and Sunday, it seemed like I saw at least one delivery driver each time I opened my front door. The drivers represented all manner of companies, including UPS, FedEx, and Amazon, plus a host of other drivers in rented or unmarked vans and box trucks. These deliveries arrived at all times during the day, prompting me to consider how often I thank them for what they are doing.

I wonder what it’s like to work non-stop during the Holiday Season? These men and women are bringing luxury goods, groceries, holiday gifts, Christmas cards, regular mail, and all kinds of other things to me and my neighbors. When they bring the packages on time, how do I greet them? If they bring it later than the promised day or time, how do I react? What if they’re early? How do I respond to these people who are serving my needs?

When my postal carrier brought the letter to my door last Friday evening (it was an express delivery), I spoke with her for a moment. I was shocked that she was working so late. She’s been delivering my mail for three years. I know she has a family and I also know that she’s the main breadwinner in a home that houses several extended family members. She’s awesome for sure, but how much thanks does she actually receive? When she returns home after working twelve hours on her feet, how much energy does she have to give to her loved ones?

Yeah, I should’ve been paying closer attention. My radar is now activated. I’m watching for my postal carriers and delivery drivers. I’m gonna let them know that I appreciate them and offer some encouragement. I’m gonna see them plenty in the next three weeks. If I don’t do anything else productive this Holiday Season, the least I can do is demonstrate some love and appreciation for someone who is taking care of me.

I know they get paid for their work…so do I. Yeah, they may have health insurance and maybe even a 401k. But really, does that help them during their long day? Do they feel loved, appreciated, or even noticed? Just a little bit could change their day, week, and Season.

Give some love to a postal carrier, package runner, or delivery driver!
