“Holiday Food”

Just 15 more days to Christmas! Woohoo! It’s time to start thinking about that special food that you wish to enjoy at Christmas. What is it for you?

I’m fascinated by food traditions. I’m not daring, so don’t bring me anything unique (such as split-pea soup) from your tradition. This country boy is happy with a big pot of beans.

I spent one Christmas with a friend whose family was Scandinavian. At Christmas, their big meal centered around something called Lutefisk. I ate it. I have not eaten it since and likely will not. That was 35 years ago but the taste is still in my mouth. (Hence, my affinity for cigars – to get rid of the taste of Lutefisk in my mouth). Yes, if Lutefisk is the only thing on the menu, I’ll fast.

What about you? Does your family or background include a unique food (or drink) for the Holidays? If so, what is it?

I’d be curious to know what food or drink people are looking forward to. Among all the traditions included during the Holidays, food is one of the most special. Sure, sometimes it’s because we’re enjoying something fantastic tasting, while other times, it’s the gathering of family and friends that makes the meals so special. Our unique food traditions, whatever they may be, are sometimes included more as a conversation piece than anything else.

It’s now 15 days to Christmas. If you’re in charge of a unique food item for the Holidays, now is the time to get the list of ingredients together. Some of the things on the list might be unusual and difficult to locate, so release some stress by at least getting that part completed. Supply and demand for specialty items is important this year, so don’t get caught by surprise!

Our food traditions are blessings. Our ability to enjoy them is truly a gift from God, for we recognize that many people in the world do not access to food. As I turn my nose up to something my own taste buds can’t handle, I need to remember that I’m incredibly blessed and privileged to have a choice of food and drink this Holiday Season.

“Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do.” (Ecclesiastes 9:7, NIV)
