“National App Day?”

Every Monday in the Holiday Season should start with something completely ridiculous. Today is National App Day. Really? Do we need a national day to celebrate all the wonderful Apps in the world?

For us old folks, this is absurd. We hate Apps. These little application things on our phones, tablets, and computers cause nothing but confusion. Can’t the airlines print boarding passes for us? Can’t we call a restaurant to place a to-go order (and still save the $ that restaurants offer when people use the App)? Can’t we mail a check to pay our bill? Has anyone visited a theme park in the last few years? Good luck being admitted, enjoying the rides, or buying something to eat without their App.

I don’t get it. Yes, I understand it, but I don’t get it. When we use Apps, companies don’t need to hire people to take our orders. When we use the App, we don’t need to clip our coupons from the Sunday newspaper. It seems like it would be better for the economy to go back to the old way of doing things, but I don’t think that’s in our future. Pretty soon, I’m guessing Santa will quit receiving hand-written letters and make us use the App to submit our lists.

Now that I’ve vented my personal feelings, let me experience a reality check for a moment. Most young people who read the Bible don’t use the paper versions any longer. They use the Apps. We used to stand in long lines late at night trying to purchase our children their favorite gifts. Now, we can stay home and use the App. When researching material for sermons, papers, and devotions like this one, I used to spend a ton of money on books. Ask anyone who knows me. My desk used to be covered with books and research materials. Now, I can save my money (and my desk) and use the App.

I’m younger than some but older than most. I don’t like Apps, but my backpack is much lighter than it was twenty years ago. I’m able to save money on the things I purchase with just a click of a button and I can make my food orders lickety-split. I can enjoy Disney and pay my bills without too much hassle.

Yes, I admit that I need the Apps. I’m not going so far as to thank God for the Apps, but I am willing to give God a big “Thank You” for the way the LORD takes care of me with things I don’t like or understand.

“We know that God works all things together for good for the ones who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28, CEB)
